Adam Lampton

Photography is my way to reorganize the world according to a more personal vision, not unlike my mother who had a tendency to rearrange furniture at odd times of the night. I would come home past curfew and walk what I thought was the path to the staircase only to be confronted by the back of the couch. It was as if the confusing reality of my youth had taken form in the dark as my mother's furniture. This project is, in large part, an exploration of the places and objects I have known all my life and their ability to surprise me unaware.

This series of six pictures was taken in early 2005 shortly after the Jamaica Plain Baptist church burned down. The interior was essentially gutted, but much of what remained was preserved in a layer of ice from the water of the fire department's hoses. However, in some corners, such as in "School/Stress", very little had changed. It is this dialogue between the permanent and the transitory that I find interesting.

Adam Lampton currently teaches photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Emerson College in Boston. He received his MFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art.
