Allegory, n.: a representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form
It is my intent to combine portraiture and narrative imagery to tell a personal story or idea.
The characters and events depicted in these paintings are based on real people and occurrences. The figures exist in contrived or memory based settings, and through the process of developing the picture symbols are added and used to enhance a certain personality or emotion. Because the work is done from my head the painting can be free to roam between formal elements of realism, i.e. illustrative portraiture, and formal elements of visual design and abstraction, i.e. components of the American flag. The end goal is to create a visual image that is all around mysterious and thought provoking, in which every element is accounted for by some meaning.
