Brian Carroll

Born in Queens but raised in the Catskill Mountains, Brian has always felt a little "city" in the country, a little "country" in the city.  He received a BA in Studio Art from Binghamton University in 2003, and completed the Teacher Preparation Program at Massachusetts College of Art in 2006.  Brian has lived and created in Jamaica Plain since 2005, and currently teaches photography, printmaking and design at Scituate High School in Scituate, MA.

“Walking through my neighborhood or driving along sleepy smaller-town highways, I often find myself drawn to building, streets, and storefronts that seem forgotten.  These neglected spaces have been built by us, yet their existence and aesthetic quality is taken for granted.

This series began as a very personal experience, an exercise in training my eye to notice not only these structures, but the spaces they exist in.  These spaces are as important as what stands in them.  I try to give equal weight and importance to the sky, ground, and surrounding areas, making them part of the subject matter as well.  Having relied on people as subject matter for years, I am now challenging myself to see what is left when people are removed.”
